Claudication (Klaw-Dih-Kay-Shun)

Claudication is pain or fatigue in the calves with ambulation that abates with rest. It is a possible symptom of peripheral artery disease (PAD) of the legs. Blockages in the arteries limit blood flow. When "demand" for blood flow increase with walking, then "supply" cannot keep up. The result is pain or fatigue in the muscles downstream of the blockages. If "demand" decreases with rest, then the symptoms go away.

Besides the bothersome symptoms, PAD may also lead to limb loss. If you or a loved one experiences symptoms consistent with claudication, then you should have it evaluated promptly. Call TN Vascular for an appointment. No referral is necessary.
